Joannie Halas



Joannie Halas (PhD, University of Alberta) is a professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. Joannie's integrated teaching, research, and community service is in the area of access to culturally relevant physical and health education for Indigenous and other under-represented populations, including racialized minority youth.

Raised in the north end of Winnipeg, Joannie uses her settler-colonial heritage and social location in support of Indigenous academic and athletic achievement, including as the Indigenous co-chair of Gaa wii ji’i diyaang – Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples “walking together, helping each other” toward a just University of Manitoba community.
